Rites
'The proper things, in the proper manner, in the proper order. God help us all.'
~ Attributed to Hersault

Rites are cards used with the work verb to perform Rituals. The Rite used has no effect on the Ritual to be cast; Rites just determine what types of cards you can draw Influences from, and the Influences then determine the Ritual. They all, with one exception, have 4 slots (one for Lore; two of Tool, Ingredient, Influence, or Follower; and your Desire, if you're Ascending) and sacrifice one of them. It is not required to place something in each slot as long as a Rituals minimum requirements are met.

Any text listed in Bold is consumed in the Rite.

Normal Rites[]

These Rites are not marked in the game files as Endgame Rites, but can still be used for Ascension.

Rite of the Map's Edge[]

The Vagabond is the only Hour that never enters the Mansus. This rite must be performed in the right place, in the right time, and the Vagabond will take that rightness for her own.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Offering: Influence What influence will be taken?
  • Instrument: Tools What is our instrument?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Sunset Rite[]

The assistant must cry tears of genuine emotion, which are asperged in the place where the influence lies. If all is done well, the Sun-in-Rags will consume the influence, acknowledge an ending, and lend its assistance.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Assistant: Follower OR Prisoner Who will speak the words?
  • Offering: Influence What influence will be consumed?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Rite of the Sea's Feasting[]

This rite calls on the Witch-and-Sister to close the gap between what is and what might be. The adept pours, or hurls, an offering into water: preferably, but not essentially, the sea.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Instrument: Tools What is our instrument?
  • Offering: Ingredients What will we give up?
  • Desire: What might I become?: [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Rite of the Beast's Division[]

The assistant's name is taken from them in a place, or on an occasion, of power; and they are divided into nine parts. They used to be hunted like an animal, too, but times changed.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Victim: Follower OR Prisoner Who will be divided?
  • Influence: Influence What power is present?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

The Rite of the Crow's Quenching[]

This rite calls on the Beach-Crow at sunrise or moonrise. The Crow accepts the sacrifice, and returns the gifts of the earth.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Influence: Influence What power is present?
  • Offering: Ingredient What will be offered?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Previously known during beta as The Rite of the Sea's Marriage, with the following description:

This rite calls on the Sister-and-Witch to close the gap between what is and what might be. The assistant offers themselves as a spouse to the unknown: essentially, but not necessarily, the sea.

Rite of the Mother's Mercy[]

The assistant is offered in sacrifice to the Mother of Ants. But the Mother knows healing as well as poison, and she will be merciful, accepting the substitute of a lesser offering. Usually. The experience is not reassuring for the assistant.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Assistant: Follower OR Prisoner Who will speak the words?
  • Offering: Ingredient What will be offered?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

All are rewards from Vaults made with Forbidden Epic (Secret Histories 8).

Rite of the Rebel Striving[]

This rite enacts a teaching of the Forge of Days: the artisan may achieve their highest goal only by destroying their most precious tool. The Lionsmith knew this when he shattered his sword before the Colonel. So my assistant must destroy a chosen instrument.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Assistant: Follower OR Prisoner Who will speak the words?
  • Offering: Tools What will we give up?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Rite Intercalate[]

This rite recapitulates the Sun's abominable fate. It is used in extreme times by foolish adepts.

This is the only Rite that can be used to achieve the three Apostle victories.

  • Invocation: Lore Something to be lost.
  • Offering: Follower OR Prisoner OR Summon Something to be lost.
  • Surrender: Tools Something to be lost.
  • Dissolution: Influence Something to be lost.
  • Grief: Ingredient Something to be lost.
  • Desire: What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension or the Promise of the Apostle legacies. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, or have fulfilled all the requirements for your Apostle legacy's major victory, add your Ascension or Promise to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

All are rewards from Vaults made with Port Noon Anecdote (Secret Histories 14).

Endgame Rites[]

These Rites are marked in the game files as "Endgame Rites". They are meant to be used to Ascend but can be used like any other Rite.

Rite of the Crucible Soul[]

This rite uses an instrument of power to set the blood afire: fire is the lesion in the skin of the world. The assistant rarely survives unharmed.
  • Invocation: Lore What are the words?
  • Victim: Follower OR Prisoner There must always be willing blood.
  • Instrument: Tools On what will blood be shed?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:

Rite of the Watchman's Sorrow[]

This rite recalls the loss of the Watchman, who walks the house which has no walls. (Light goes before him and shadow behind. He must not see you.) The instrument of power is used to summon him to take his sacrifice: precious knowledge from the root of your thoughts. The assistant must speak the words that anchor your sanity, so choose someone you trust.
  • Sacrifice: Lore What will we forget?
  • Assistant: Follower OR Prisoner Who will speak the words?
  • Instrument: Tools What is our instrument?
  • Desire What might I become? [This slot only accepts the final stage of Ascension. If you have achieved the Sixth Mark, add your Ascension to this slot to complete a Great Work.]

Can be obtained from:
