Studying two Lore fragments together will allow you to combine them into a single, higher-level fragment if you complete a number of challenges, indicated by the lore fragments' Aspects. Second- and fourth-level lore require one challenge, sixth- and eighth-level lore require two challenges, and tenth- and twelfth-level lore require three. Subverting Lore may require you to complete more: for instance, subverting Centipede Testament (requires Obsessive, Illumination, and Intuition challenges) with Formulae Concursate (requires Knowledge, Illumination, and Paradox challenges) will require you to solve five challenges (Obsessive, Intuition, Illumination, Knowledge, and Paradox).
Challenges can be solved using a mix of Dread, Fascination, Headquarters aspects, Reason, Passion, Health, Prisoners, Erudition, and/or Glimmering. Reason and Passion used will either be exhausted or destroyed; Health will be exhausted or possibly converted to An Injury; Glimmering and Erudition will be consumed; all others will be returned, with Dread and Fascination having the 70% chance to create additional Dread/Fascination. There are 30 seconds in which to provide an appropriate card; if this is not done, the challenge fails and lore and previously-provided cards will be returned to the board. If one or more challenges were overcome before failing, the corresponding Aspect(s) on the fragments will be removed and the challenges will not need to be repeated.
The current list of challenge aspects include Knowledge, Intuition, Grim, Obsessive, Paradox, Illumination, and Practical challenges.
|Erudition |Library||Glimmering |Sanctuary||Fascinatio |Library |Rarefied Mind Reason skill||Dread |Pit |Silent Intensity Reason skill||Reason |Library |Never-No Passion skill||Passion |Sanctuary |Open Soul Passion skill||Health |Prisoner|
- This is a puzzle with missing pieces. I might find those pieces in odd corners of scholarship.
- With time and peace, answers sometimes come unannounced.
- Water fills the cup; light fills the mind.
An Illumination challenge can be solved using a Fascination card (doing so has a 70% chance of creating additional Fascination), by using your Headquarters if it has the Library aspect, or by using the Rarefied Mind skill (a fourth-level Reason skill, upgraded using either Forge, Knock, or Lantern).
Illumination challenges will need to be completed to upgrade Lantern and Moth lore fragments of the sixth level or higher, as well as Forge and Secret Histories lore fragments of the tenth level or higher.
- I'll learn.
A Grim Lesson challenge can be solved using a Dread card (doing so has a 70% chance of creating additional Dread), by using your Headquarters if it has the Pit aspect, or by using the Silent Intensity skill (a fourth-level Reason skill, upgraded using either Edge, Secret Histories, or Winter).
- This subject demands more attention than is safe.
An Obsessive Research challenge can be solved using a Reason card (doing so has a 10% chance of permanently damaging the card), by using your Headquarters if it has the Library aspect, or by using the Never-No skill (a fourth-level Passion skill, upgraded using either Heart or Moth).
- Truth is a serpent. Answers feed its appetites.
A Paradoxical Resolution challenge can be solved using a Passion card (doing so has a 10% chance of permanently damaging the card), by using your Headquarters if it has the Sanctuary aspect, or by using the Open Soul skill (a fourth-level Passion skill, upgraded using either Grail or Knock).
- Pain is only what happens now; knowledge is what we will remember.
